Stool for Homecation.
Solid wood & MDF, lacquered matte or glossy.
On first sight, it’s just a simple stool that hopefully puts a smile on your face.
But let me give you a small lecture about what’s behind the design to provide you with some background while introducing you to this new brand.
When @sanni.te first spoke to me about the idea for her own design brand Homecation, the first typology of object we talked about was a stool. She had inherited an antique wooden milking stool (slide 2) which is of significant sentimental value to her and for Homecation, she wanted to create a contemporary take on this very utilitarian and iconic wooden stool.
Traditionally, these stools were rather tools (to get 🥛) than furniture so everything about their design is utilitarian. The majority of milking stools have three legs and I strongly suspect the reason to be the unrivalled self-levelling qualities of three-legged stands in general. This comes in handy in a farm setting where the floor might not always be perfectly smooth and even. The inclination of the three legs was quite strong in order to create the largest possible footprint for the most-stable seat when actively sitting and working on it while milking a cow.
I decided to keep the overall composition and construction true to the original (round, bowl-shaped seat, round legs) while decisively switching certain aspects up in my way. Most apparently, the Homecation stool has four legs instead of three. This is not only due to my own personal preferences of symmetry and proportion, but also inspired by the 🐄 itself.
Additionally, most stools nowadays are used as hybrid objects which also serve as a side table. So having a flat surface on top is quite beneficial. You can place your book and coffee cup down on it without worrying about it tipping over.
While the original (and most other stools of this kind) have spindle-shaped legs which get slimmer towards each end, I decided for straight, cylindrical legs with a perfectly semi-spherical rounded end.
Last but not least, the inclination of the legs is not as strong and they are more straight, resulting in a more exciting character and stance in my opinion.
